Flight Duration Calculator estimates how long a flight takes between any two airports, along with the distance and the time zones at each end. It is a free reference tool. There is nothing to sign up for and we do not sell tickets.
How we calculate flight times
We compute the great circle distance between the two airports from their published coordinates, then convert that distance into a duration using a typical jet cruise speed, plus a fixed allowance for taxi, take-off, climb, descent and landing. That allowance is why a very short hop still shows a duration well above what pure cruise speed would suggest.
Every figure on this site is an estimate for a direct flight. It does not account for connections or layovers, the routing air traffic control actually assigns, headwinds and tailwinds, holding patterns, or the aircraft type an airline chooses to operate. Real schedules routinely differ from the estimate by twenty to thirty minutes, and by more on long-haul routes where jet stream effects are large. Treat our numbers as planning guidance, and confirm the actual duration with the airline before you rely on it.
Where the data comes from
Airport names, IATA and ICAO codes, coordinates and IANA time zones come from an open airport dataset of roughly 29,000 entries. Distances are computed at request time from those coordinates rather than stored, so a corrected coordinate flows through to every route immediately.
What the site covers
We publish 155 departure city hubs and 1550 city-to-city routes, in 12 languages. You can browse everything from the route directory or the city directory, or use the calculator on the home page to check any pair of airports in the dataset.
